A gentleman's guide: how to buy the perfect lingerie for the woman you love
There are countless occasions to buy the woman you love a gift - her birthday, name day, Christmas, your anniversary, Valentine's Day, International Women's Day… Not to mention gifts given just because, for no occasion at all. Women adore beautiful lingerie, especially when it comes from their man. Lace lingerie boosts confidence and sends a clear message: you look divine in it! Surely we don't need to convince you any further that it's a great gift idea?
We've put together a few tips to make the tricky task of buying the perfect lingerie easier.
Do a little research
Although many of you certainly won't need to. Pay attention to the kind of lingerie she likes. Does she prefer soft lace bras, or perhaps padded ones with alluring straps along the neckline? Does she wear thongs or briefs more often? Or maybe she likes higher-rise briefs?
Of course, there's nothing to stop you showing a little initiative and choosing lingerie she doesn't usually wear, but that you'd love to see her in. As women, we'll let you in on a secret: this is a great hint for us - you're showing us what you like. Who knows - maybe next time you'll be the one who gets a surprise?
How do you choose the right bra size?
Sadly, it's not the easiest task, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Let's start by explaining what the numbers and letters in bra sizes mean. The number, e.g. 70 or 75, is the underbust measurement. The letter, e.g. C or D, is the cup size. For example: if the underbust measures 72 cm and the bust 89 cm, the correct size is 70D.
Look for help in her lingerie drawer. Take her favourite bra and check the size - if she loves wearing it so much, it must fit perfectly. If it's from the brand you're planning to buy from - bingo! If not, compare the size charts of both brands. You can also lay the bra flat and measure the underbust band and the widest part of the cups.
Some bras come in sizes that match clothing sizes - XS, S, M and L. In that case your task is a little easier - take a peek in her wardrobe and see which size rules the labels of her T-shirts, shirts or dresses.
A tried-and-tested trick: If you get on well with her best friend or sister, ask her to help you work out the right size. She may know straight away (after all, she's the one who always goes shopping with her), or she can discreetly ask. ‘Hey, I bought a gorgeous bra, but sadly it's too small / too big for me… What size do you wear (or what are your bust and underbust measurements in centimetres)? I'd happily let you have it if it fits!’ It ALWAYS works!
Even if you don't get the bra size quite right - there's no need to worry. You have 30 days to return it, and when you order the right size you can check it with your partner - after all, she's already seen her gift, right?
