The magic of jewellery. The magic of the screen.
Jewellery has always been a source of fascination and desire. For women and men alike. No wonder, then, that it has so often found its way into the scripts of Hollywood's biggest productions. Stop for a moment, close your eyes and think - which film comes to mind when you think of jewellery? For us, top of the list is the double Oscar-winning ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's’, starring the stunning Audrey Hepburn. Its magnificent necklace has become one of the most famous in the world. It was undoubtedly the most important finishing touch to the heroine's look. In doing so, it set the direction and character of evening wear for millions of women.
Diam… Jewellery is a girl's best friend.
The iconic ‘Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend’, sung by Marilyn Monroe in the comedy ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, would probably be sung today as ‘Jewellery Is a Girl's Best Friend’. Because although this rare mineral has made its way from exclusive salons to everyday customers, in engagement rings for instance, most everyday looks still rely on gold and silver pieces. In ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’, Matthew McConaughey sang the praises of diamonds in the ‘Frost Yourself’ campaign, while the 80-carat ‘Isadora’ necklace that starred in the final scene was bought for 5 million dollars just after filming wrapped! In total, real jewellery worth a staggering 14 million dollars was borrowed for the set!
As a byword for luxury and exclusivity, diamonds undeniably reign supreme at auctions around the world and in red carpet looks.
Creating the costumes for the screen adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby’, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, was both a challenge for the costume designers and a chance to play with form. Here, jewellery gave the outfits a unique character and class. The magic of cinema makes millions of people covet the objects seen in iconic scenes. And so it was in this case too. Outfits inspired by the Roaring 20s and art deco made a comeback in high society. In this film, it wasn't only the women who wore exquisite jewellery. The men dazzled on screen with elegant accessories. These included cufflinks, watches and stylish cigarette cases. All of the leading man's accessories were based on pure silver and black enamel, underlining the refinement and wealth of the character played by DiCaprio.
Our film line-up closes with a modern-day Cinderella story, ‘Pretty Woman’, featuring a brilliant performance from Julia Roberts. Beyond the beautiful transformation of the rough-around-the-edges Vivian, the film is dominated by Hollywood Boulevard looks, yet it's the necklace scene that has earned its place among the most iconic scenes of all time. Her co-star spontaneously snapped the necklace box shut, prompting an unplanned burst of laughter from the actress. The director, Garry Marshall, was so delighted with the scene that he decided to keep it in the film. And it was definitely the right call. Interestingly, the scene in which Richard Gere presents the necklace to Julia Roberts wasn't scripted.
